We are very grateful to Cross Country USA Magazine for featuring “The Last Song” in this month’s “The Story Behind the Song.” The two-page article shares not only how writers Mike Owens and Nick Reed came to write the song, but also why its message became so personal to us.

Sometimes a song comes along that is more than simply another song to record. The Last Song was that kind of song for us.

Its message is a simple one: none of us is promised tomorrow, or even the next opportunity to tell someone about Jesus. That makes every opportunity God gives us to sing, minister, and share the Gospel something we never want to take for granted.

We thank God for continuing to open doors for us as we travel from church to church and community to community. After all these years, it is still a privilege to stand before people and share His message through country gospel music.

We are especially thankful to Mike Owens and Nick Reed for writing The Last Song and trusting us with a song that has become very personal to Debra and me. The article tells that story—including why Debra initially told me she did not want us to record it, and why that eventually changed.

And to the radio programmers and DJs who have played the song, thank you. Your support has carried its message farther than we ever could on our own. We were blessed to see The Last Song reach #1 on Christian Voice Magazine’s Country Gospel Top 100 for September, and we are deeply grateful for every station that helped it get there.
